Switcheroo

I spent this morning switching out the clothes in LP's and AK's dressers. Apparently fall crept up on me and I didn't even notice! Yesterday, I sent the girls to school in summer clothes! Nothing screams "inattentive mom" like kids in shorts in 65 degree weather.

The only way I could accomplish the drawer updating was to send AK to school. On my train ride home from a loooong day in NYC for work, I decided that I would treat myself to a day alone. My original intention was to get a mani-pedi, but the weather is so miserable, and the dressers were in such disarray that I had no choice.

It took more than three hours to empty AK's dressers, replace it with items from the 12-18 month bin of hand-me-downs from LP, refill the bin with 6-12 month clothes, empty LP's dresser, refill it with newly purchased 4T clothes and 3T clothes leftover from the spring, and fill another bin with 2T and 3T summer clothes.

It was actually a very useful exercise. Especially since I went to look around at the Gap after lunch and I was able to resist buying on sale, very adorable 12-18 month clothes for AK. She has way more clothes than LP. Poor thing will never get new clothes. Which is good - because I don't have room for them!

I did treat myself to lunch at our local Indian takeout joint, so that was good. And I do have a sense of accomplishment. Even if it wasn't how I intended to spend my 33rd birthday, I will survive. And my children will be weather appropriate.

Not to worry, dearest readers! The birthday celebration is not over! I did get birthday songs, kisses, cards and wishes from my two favorite ladies, the Hoos and a whole host of friends. All is not lost yet! Tomorrow we head to the Norwalk Oyster Festival and Sunday is a Connecticut Sun game up at Mohegan Sun. I am looking forward to both and hope to have a full report next week.

Teaching Tact

Saturday night we went on a family date. My little family of four went over to the home of another little family of four for pizza and make your own sundaes. Our kids are exactly the same age and for the most part get along splendidly. In fact, I think the littlest buggers - AK and WMK - are in love, although AK is coy about it, because she smiled but didn't kiss back when her boyfriend smooched her.

Anyway, Chlo-Chlo is all about princesses and dress up. LP was in heaven. Within a minute of us entering their pristine home, both girls had stripped down to their skivvies and were pulling costumes out of the playroom with great fanfare. Apparently, both chose ballet outfits for the first act.

LP walks out with a huge smile in a tutued leotard on backwards. The low cut v that was supposed to be in the back? Was in the front practically exposing her ninnies and navel. She was like the toddler J. Lo. Very fashion forward.

Lesson 400, "Now that you know how to dress yourself, make sure you do it right." Crucial because the Hoos couldn't tell that the leotard was backwards and would have dressed LP that way himself!

Being visually tacky is only one half of the equation. LP is also very direct, like most toddlers.

Yesterday as we took a family walk she announced, "Jules has a birthmark. It will go away when she gets big." Jules is the little sister of a boy in the older class at preschool. That is, he is not even in LP's class. Apparently Jules came in to drop off her big brother and LP got all inquisitive and in-your-face asking questions. Cute for a three-year old, but exponentially less cute as she gets older.

I guess it is time to start the "asking appropriate questions" and "keeping things to yourself" training. Mommy could probably use some help in those areas as well.

Extraordinarily Ordinary

AK slept until after 5 last night! Woo-hoo! It probably helps that she started a new course of antibiotics after being diagnosed with yet another ear infection during her 9 month check up yesterday. I am hopeful that once the meds run their course more sleep will be in my future.

Too bad her big sister woke up at 2 yelling "MOMMMMYYYYYY!" at the top of her lungs. I found her sitting upright saying, "I want to come in your bed." She might have added "...and watch TV," to the end of the sentence, but I was totally foggy, so I could have made that part up. Umm...no. I reminded her that it was the middle of the night and helped her lay back down.

LP also woke up at 5 and this time the Hoos got up. She was once again sitting up and this time she was complaining that her pillow fell off her bed.

The good news is that we have been leaving the baby gate open at the door to her room as a precursor to taking it down. Either she hasn't noticed or she is so well trained that she won't even bother trying to leave her bed when it is pitch black out.

Back to AK's 9 month check up. My little peanut is almost exactly at the 50th percentile in terms of length, weight and head circumference. She still weighs less (17.9) than LP did at her 6 month (18.1) and almost 1 1/2 pounds less than LP at 9 months (19.2).

All of this means that, despite having two little girls born at exactly the same time of year, handing down clothes may still be a problem. LP was wearing size 12-18 month leading up to her first birthday; AK fills out the 6 month size nicely . Between the size differential and the number of clothing items LP has managed to destroy (mostly via her love for smearing staining foods on herself) AK might just find herself with a whole bunch of new clothes. Or, more likely, swimming in LP's summer outfits.

Shape Shifting

I am having a hard time adjusting my wardrobe to my ever-evolving body and all of its (and my) requirements.

The Usual. Typically I am a jeans a t-shirt kind of girl. I like to be comfortable and casual. I step it up slightly (but admittedly not much) for work. Because LP slobbers, snots or dumps food on me often, most of my clothes tend to be easy to wash.

The Preggo. When you are pregnant, you wear maternity clothes. They can be loose early on to cover your expanding, but not-quite-yet-pregnant-looking body or they can be tight to show off your ripening shape. I went with the tight because I carried Dee straight out in front of me and trapeze shirts and the like made me look like a circus tent. I don't need help looking short and dumpy.

And Now. Fortunately I have lost about 20 of the 30 or so pounds I put on while gestating Dee. Unfortunately, it takes much longer to lose the post-baby-skin. In fact, I don't think I ever really lost the pouch I had acquired from LP. It did shrink a bit though.

In addition to having to figure out how best to hide my stomach flap (do you tuck it in?) I also have the good fortune of needing to wear nursing pads. Dee has such an erratic eating schedule that I leak way more frequently than I did with LP. Without the absorbent circles in my bra I live in constant fear that I will have growing wet circles on the front of my shirt. And let me reassure you, this is no wet t-shirt contest that anyone wants to participate in or watch.

Between the pouch and the circles, I think I look like Jabba the Hut wearing pasties.

You would think that there would be SOMETHING in my closet or multiple dressers that would not only cover but potentially (dare I say) flatter me. You would be wrong. My maternity clothes continue to be tight across the chest (the extra padding on my stomach has moved to my breasts), highlighting the hot hot hot nursing pads. My non-maternity clothes aren't baggy across the middle, highlighting the fabulous muffin top created by my post-maternity flab.

At this point, Dee and LP are my best accessories and I hope to use them as camouflage as much as possible. Even better, the Hoos thinks I look great. That goes a long way to helping me feel better about my shape-shifting. That being said, I still wouldn't mind having more then two shirts and one pair of maternity shorts to wear out in public.
